Comment from recent course ran for University of London Air Squadron:
"The husky sledding experience was a sport I had not previously attempted or even thought would be possible without snow in the civil Kent countryside. The day got off to an excellent start with any fears about approaching a kennel full of energetic husky dogs totally removed by the speed at which we were thrown into our first challenge of establishing authority and respect with our 2 assigned huskies. The course leader gave clear and concise information at all times allowing us to take initiative as well as be safe throughout the day.
The complete unfamiliarity when getting on the husky trike for the very first time and disappearing over the hill on to the track was hugely exhilarating and required a lot of awareness as I had to get used to the huskies wondering off the track, the general feel of the trike, the fact that not every bump on the track would cause an accident and that corners are nothing to be afraid of. I got a lot more out of this exercise than I initially expected; as a fairly panic-prone person it was highlighted that in a difficult husky sledding (or any unexpected) situation a cool head and fast appropriate action is far more effective than panic and screams.
The ULAS group size was good for getting to know a few people on the squadron better and supporting / helping each other if any of us came into any difficulties which provided a great sense to team spirit throughout the day. I am very grateful to the course organisers for the chance to try out a new sport, learn about myself in a new situation and get to spend a day with a lovely pack to husky dogs. "
